“The Way I Are” is a song from Bebe Rexha’s album, “All Your Fault Pt. 2”, which was released 19 May 2017.
About the song, Bebe said:
“It’s a f-you song to the record label. When you’re developing as an artist you have to kinda fight the stereotype of what everybody’s expecting of you, what way you should be, how you should look, what color your hair should be, how your make up should be and what you should wear. But the most important thing is if you like you and if you like the way you look”.
It’s basically a fuck you to all the people in the music business who didn’t see me as what a pop star should be because I was this Albanian girl from Brooklyn, New York, was a little bit different, didn’t really know how to get into the music business. I didn’t look the part. I wasn’t 90 pounds and long blonde hair. This was pre-Kim Kardashian, and then she made it okay to have a big ass.
I think we were in the studio for five hours, but that was because we were eating and taking breaks and coming back and working on hooks. Then we did revisit the song a lot after that. The production and stuff, but the actual creation of the song was pretty quick.
It was weird because we were stuck on the hook for a second. We couldn’t figure out the hook. You think that every hook has to be this big departure. Like, high notes and loud. It’s the opposite of what you’d expect.
Absolutely. I remember when she did “Hero” with Mariah Carey. It was the best thing ever. I would always try to sing it in the house and crack because I just didn’t have that voice when I was growing up. I remember watching The Bodyguard with my mom. Her voice always seemed so just heavenly and kind of like it was a gift from God. I think I really looked up to Whitney. I don’t know. Just something about her that was just so amazing. Yeah, she was a big part of my inspiration.
When I got his verse, I was like, “Wow.” I was like, “This reminds me kind of the old Wayne.” It just was so good, the melodic stuff. I’ve noticed that he said, “I just want to dance with somebody, but I could never, ever dance like Bobby.” I was like, “Whitney and Bobby is, like, yo.” I was like, “That’s amazing.” He’s just so special and he’s so dope. That blew my mind.
The music video directed by TA SOTPA was released on June 1, 2017. The fashion for the music video was inspired by vintage movies such as Grease. The video features video game Just Dance 2018 which the song is featured on.
Bebe Rexha and Lil Wayne performed the single together on Jimmy Kimmel! Live. Rexha later performed a solo version of the song on Good Morning America as part of their Summer Concert Series.
